Using the Art of Tattooing to Enhance and Correct
What to Expect
First I will clean your eyebrows with an alcohol swab to prep the skin. We then apply numbing cream to the area. It will take the cream about 15-20 minutes to work. During that time I will set up everything I will need to perform the procedure. This includes mixing your colors and discussing with you what kind of results you are looking to achieve.
After that, we wipe off the numbing cream and take before-pictures. We then draw your eyebrows with a pencil. Together we decide what shape looks best on you and my goal is always what is most flattering to your unique face. I prefer a natural result and a majority of my clients feel the same way. Each person is different therefore each person’s eyebrows are unique to them. I avoid following trends because trends come and go. A “trendy” looking tattoo may look dated when trends change. However, looking natural is always in style.
Once we decide on the perfect shape and color we begin the procedure. I always start at the tail of the brow by drawing a single hair stroke. I then wipe the area and check that the color looks good. If it does, I proceed with drawing feather-like hair strokes throughout the brow mimicking the growth pattern of your actual hair. If you have no eyebrows I will create a hair growth pattern for you. My goal is to add to what you already have so that no one can tell what is actual hair and what is tattooed. We continue this on both eyebrows.
Sometimes depending on the look we are trying to achieve, I will add some soft shading to the hair strokes as well. This can give a more complete look for those that need a little more definition. This method is necessary when doing corrective brow procedures over top faded permeant makeup.
Once the procedure is complete we clean the area and take after-photos. I apply an after-care ointment, provide you with instructions on how to care for your new brows, and an ointment for you to take home.
I recommend booking your follow-up appointment right away to ensure that you get a good time slot. I recommend a follow-up 4-6 weeks after your procedure to check on the results. If needed, more tattooing may be added during the follow-up appointment.
After your procedure, I recommend gently blotting the brows every 30 minutes or as needed. It is normal for a little clear fluid to come out of your skin immediately following the procedure. This clear fluid is called lymph and it is perfectly normal. Because of the technique I use, the discharge is very minimal and stops within an hour after the procedure.
Before going to bed, gently clean the brows with gentle soap, preferably an antibacterial one. Create a lather in your hands and very gently massage the brows. Rinse with water and immediately pat dry with paper towels. Wait 20 minutes and then apply ointment using a Q-tip. A grain of rice is a good measure of how much ointment to use. This will be enough to cover both eyebrows. Repeat this routine morning and night for 1 week.
Things to Avoid While Healing
- excessive moisture such as steam or saunas
- swimming or excessive sweating
- any and all types of active skincare like Retin A, glycolic or alpha hydroxy acids, exfoliants of any kind
- pets near your face
- excessive sun exposure
- touching with dirty hands
- makeup and makeup brushes
It is important to treat the area as a fresh wound that you need to keep clean and dry. Even though the amount of trauma is minimal, we are still breaking the skin with tiny needles and because of this, you need to treat it as such for the best results.
After a day or two the color may look a little bit darker, it’s normal. After 3-4 days you may or may not experience mild flaking of the pigment. This is also normal. Do not pick or pull at the skin: allow it to fall off naturally. After a week, the pigment might look faded – this is also normal. The color will return and if it is still too light or if you decide you would like to go thicker, we can add more during your follow-up visit.
For the most part, clients love the results right away and report the healing time as not a big deal. They are comfortable going about their daily activities with no problems. In fact, no one can even tell that you had your eyebrows done. They just think, “Wow why do you look so good?” Results look natural and never look fake or overdone.
